Luckily for me the touchscreen still worked fine, so I was able to navigate through my touchpad troubles with relative ease. Lenovo's "canned" response is that this is technology and sometimes there are issues. I recently noticed that my external Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse would freeze every few minutes.
I think it is a software problem.
